Pat: You are probably close on the date of transitioning from CONTINUOUS DISCHARGE BOOK better known as Copeland Book to the Z card.My book was issued September 5, 1942 in Cleveland and its olive drab canvas cover bears the number 262646.The official Certificate Of Service on banknote paper is secured under a riveted fabric strap in the back of the book and bears a different printed number but it has an inked entry tieing the certificate to the number on the Copeland Book. David M's remarks gave me a chuckle.I guess in time we all look at those old photos and are incredulous at our own youth. My later business partner for 40 years got his "papers" about the same time (presumably a bit before me) but he was never issued a Copeland book. In 1942 security wasn't very tight, but by late 1943 we all had to carry a Security ID card from the Captain Of The Port in order to go near a waterfront.`My photo sports a bow tie on an unshaven youth.
