I haven't heard the work "fink" used in years. I recieved my discharge book in 1941 and used it into the 50's before switching to discharge certificates. As I recall a "fink" was anyone who was anti-union. The book came in handy when merchant marines became offical veteran's of WW II in the late 80's. All I had to do to get my "DD 214" was photo copy the books entries. Captain's looked down on men with too many discharges. Loyalty was a big thing back then. On the carferry Ashtabula, as the story goes, a coal passer had been aboard for seven years waiting for a fireman opening. He finally quit and went elsewhere. The Ch. Engineer's comment was, "I knew he wasn't going to be a steady man when he come here."
