the continuous discharge book was a big concern in the early days of the labor movement on the Lakes. As noted here, it could be and was used as a means by shipowners to identify those who were pro-union, and became the employers' dog tag in that respect. Would anyone today want to present this documentation to a prospective employer when changing jobs? on the other hand, the concise record that these books contain is amazing. My Dad's book starts back in '37 when he signed on the William B. Davock, and goes through his retirement in '76. Each boat, each Captain, each date and place of engagement, and the date and place of discharge, signoffs for vacations included.
