David, back in the late 1970s/early '80s there was a huge amount of Canadian wheat being exported down the St. Lawrence Seaway, the highest amount in history if I'm not mistaken. I believe the construction of the vessels you mentioned was backed up by contracts between the shipowners and the Canadian Wheat Board. At that time, straight-deckers were ideal for the grain trade due to their high cubic capacity. Straight deckers were also likely a lot less expensive to build than self-unloaders, since there is less machinery to build and install in the ship.
