I joined the Viscount Bennett in april 1950 as a fireman(coal)We left Buffalo a week or so later and although it was a little windy on lake erie i was mostly ok.When we entered lake huron(we were bound for the canadian lakehead)she began to roll and did'nt stop till we hit Detour.I was very sick and if someone had handed me a gun i,m sure i would have done myself in.Recuperated in the st marys river but the rolling started again on superior and strangly enough after being sick for one of my watches i felt better later and was never seasick again.I tried the crackers bit but to no avail Months later i was promoted to oiler and on the chiefs watch (8-12).The chief who was in the navy(ww 2)said he almost always got sick but a spoonfull of brandy once an hour helped a lot.Have been on a couple of ferrys since then on Georgian bay, lake michigan (anyone recall the Vacation land ?)Came close to being sick on the Princess of Nanaimo some years back.Galley smells, namely grease or oil dont seem to help much.I came to love going up to the boatdeck dureing rough weather and standing close to the warmth of the stack and watch the boat pictch and roll and especially the waves breaking over the bow or shipside. Stan Was on the Renvoyle and she was like corkscrew in a storm.
