Date: July 3, 1918 Time: 2:30 pm -Boarded the SS Amasa Stone, an ore carrying vessel plying the Great Lake, at Gary, Indiana. Was assigned to quarters on the berth deck, forward on starboard side. Signed ship's orders and placed quarters in ship-shape condition. Time: 3:15 pm -Reported to the first mate for duty and took a turn at the wheel. Course N by E 1/8 E Time: 6:15 pm -Relieved from duty until 12:15 am. Course still N by E 1/8 E. Time: 6:45 pm -Practiced signals and studied Knights Seamanship until 9:00 pm.
