A hawser is generally any large line (rope) aboard ship. The most common hawser is the towline between a tug and tow. On the last two cutters I served on we had two towing hawsers, one was 6 inch diameter and the other was 8 inch diameter. On the old sailing ships, the anchor line was a hawser - and was lead through the hawse pipe. HAWSER is a 65-foot USCG tug based in the NYC area.
