Thanks for the memories! I remember back then it was nothing to have 25+ boats a day go through the DeTour Passage. Back then we had the DeTour Dock where the ships stopped to unload coal or fuel up with coal. I remember the first year I taught art in the DeTour school system back in 1969 I had a student whose family delivered the coal to the school and when I had him in class he had the dirtiest coal stained hands and never could get them clean. The other boats used to fuel up at the Lime Island fueling station just up the St. Marys River from us a few miles so we were used to lots of boat traffic all the time. You would have loved it Violet. There were so many boats you took them for granted and stopped looking and getting excited. How I wish it was like that around here again! You don't know what you have until its gone is so true. Only the pictures and memories of a great era in boating.
