Within the last two years or so someone posted pictures of the Calcite II holds. She has been hauling salt and the visual image was incredible. I recall a description that with the loading of each salt cargo the previous corrosion gets knocked off and the process repeats. Kind of like repeatedly knocking a scab off of your body I guess. I'm not sure of coatings but somebody likely does.
