The number of people on watch in the pilot house is usually one or two depending on company and ship. There is usually a mate and a wheelsman, although on the Presque Isle you have a mate during the daylight hours and an AB joins him for the night watch and in the rivers or harbors. The captain also stays in the pilot house during the the rivers. The watchman stand on the bow during the rivers and sometimes at the captains discretion during low visibility. They perform work on deck during the day and relieve the wheelsman for his coffee break. At night on the lake they tend to sit in the rec room and watch T.V. (watchman fits).
