I agree with you, it is far too easy to get a permit (environmental permit) to build a natural gas fired plant than a coal fired plant. We heat our homes with gas and the power companies are taking the easy way out. The price of natural gas is starting to show this. I have worked on jet engine power plants that burn gas (at a rather large rate) and they are putting more of these in. I have also worked on equipment to clean up the stacks on existing coal plants (NOX reduction SCR equipment). The Russians did pioneering research with plasma direct conversion of coal to electricity (article in Popular Mechanics I think a long time ago) and I wonder what came of this? That article might have been in Scientific American instead, I don't know. Maybe we need to collaborate with the Russians on their research, they have some very good scientists.
