To give an example of how much ore one blast furnace can use and how much the Great Lakes shipping industry and mining industry relies on one furnace is the #7 Furnace at Inspat(Inland Steel). The #7 recently finished an 80 day 92 million doller reline and overhaul on October 4th. The #7 furnace is the largest blast furnace in the western hemisphere with a DAILY output of 10,000 tons of pig iron. The entire production of the Minorca mine in Minnesota and part of the production of the Empire mine in Michigan are dedicated to feed this massive furnace. This furnace will use more than 150,000 tons of raw materials per week. Many jobs are relying on this one furnace alone and its apetite. Also, one note, The Chinese estimate that they will IMPORT 135,000,000 tons of Iron ore in the year 2004 to feed their growing steel industry. No surprise that they are buying pellets and mines anywhere they can.
