Re: STCW for ordinary seaman Call the union and ask if you need an STCW certificate. You probably do -NOT- need the certificate. Ordinary seaman are not required by law to have an STCW certificate. A few companies like the OS to have it so the OS can relieve the AB on lookout. Although the Coast Guard regional exam centers are not consistent, most will not give an OS a STCW certificate until the OS has taken the Basic Safety course and completed an on-ship assessment. The basic safety course is a 4-day, $900 course offered by union schools and other schools. I took the course at Cal Maritime in San Francisco. Maritime Professional Training in Fort Lauderdale has the course too. Ft. Lauderdale is a good place to take the course - cheap housing, near the airport, and near the beaches.
