Not sure how it is now, but back in the 70s alot of how a boat was maintained depended on its schedule. Most of the boats of the day rarely had long "deadhead" runs (running without cargo). This prevented most maintenance in the cargo holds. But, it seemd that there was always time for chippin-n-paintin everwhere else on the boat! The only exception to this - from personal experience - was the old Sylvania. The Syl was on a dedicated Toledo/Detroit coal run. I spent about 6 weeks on her and never did see a paint brush! Where other boats often had their "walkways" (deck between the hatches and the rails) painted 2 or 3 times per season with non-skid paint, the Sylvania's walkways were bare steel because there just wasn't time to rinse the deck AND paint it between ports.
