Jim, The Spartan was launched in 1952 in Sturegon Bay Wisconsin and bulit by the Christy Corp, for The Cheasapeake and Ohio Railroad, The sucessor of the Pere Marquette Railroad. The Chessie continued the bulding of the PM by buliding ferries in pairs (with the exception of The City of Midland 41 due to WWII) and a year later in 1953 the Badger was launched. Today the Badger is the only one still opperating, by the Lake Michigan Carferry. The Spartan last opperated Jan,1979, and sits awaiting whatever comes her way. There was talk a few years back of refurbing her and running between Ludington and Milwaukee, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon with the current economic state. as a footnote, The Spartan was named in honor of the Michigan State Univ. Mascot, The Spartans, and the Badger for The Universety of Wisconsin Badgers. Kevin
