Jim, The water level changes that occured this week were due to the West to South West gales that have been blowing on Lake Erie. Since the major axis of the lake is WSW to ENE, the wind actually pushes the water to Buffalo where the level can be 6 to 8 feet higher than it is in Toledo. The Livingston Channel is the bottleneck with an available depth of 26.5 feet below Low Water (Chart)Datum. with a minus 6 inch gage that only leaves 26 feet. Even with the recent average water levels ships have less than 2 feet of clearance in the Livingston which is a rock cut.
