Tom - The McNamara was the only boat that received restricted approval from the U. S. Coast Guard and the U. S. Bureau of Shipping to operate with open hatches. The original telescoping hatches of the a. Stadacona, b. W. H. McGean were scrapped and replaced with six foot extensions of the hatch coaming to increase cargo capacity. The McNamara operated year round from summer 1966 until spring, 1971 without ever closing her hatches. She made 1437 trips between Toledo and the Ford Rouge plant and carried 14,000,000 tons of coal (4 round trips every 5 days for 5 years!).
