I'm no expert on this, since it usually happens far away from my "neighborhood", but at least a few times a year mid-sized (arond 400' long?) oceangoing tankers like the 'Jo Spirit' bring rum and other liquor to Hamilton, Ontario from Puerto Rico. This may happen elsewhere around the lakes and seaway, but I can't recall for sure. I'm sure this is a common practice throughout the rest of the world, too. It makes more sense to send the liquor in bulk as far as possible before bottling it and worrying about glass breaking during transport.
