I was a fireman at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn as well as the school district. (at the schools we had one old boiler co firing oil still) Original Wally hit it on the spot, although he wasn't supposed to give away the secret about the splash of oil. That's not in the book. oil is money and explosion hazard in a confined space. (Ok that is how we do it and I preferred just a splash of journal oil.) Now in all honesty if the boiler had been "down" for quite a length of time and was cold, we would run a little wood fire to bring things up slow. If you dont do this the tubes can pull away from the sheets and leak and casue expensive repairs damage to the boiler. To answer your question Herm, if it had been down for a few months, maybe a few rags with kerosene and a thin fire, bring it up nice and slow. maybe 12-18 hours?
