There are usually some means to tie up the boat. These places are termed 'punt jobs' where the deckhands row ashore in the punt and secure the lines. Those are normally mud or sand bottoms and as you unload cargo you get nearer to the shore. Can be a real nerve racking tie up wind conditions.
