"Death's Door" is the name given to the straits separating the northern tip of Door County located in Wisconsin (the "thumb",) and the Potawatomi Islands of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The straights are riddled with hazards to marine activity, leading the French to aptly call the area "Porte des Morts," meaning "the door of the dead." Although it is a very beautiful place and popular tourist destination, literally hundreds of ships (and men) have met untimely deaths in the area.
