The 110 knots was actually 110 mph or 98 knots and was reported by the J. Burton Ayers at 7:00 a.m. January 26, 1978. The J. Burton Ayers had been stuck for a week in heavy ice in the Pelee Passage and the USCG Northwind was attempting to break her free when the storm hit. The Northwind reported winds of 80 knots gusting to 90 knots at 9:00 a.m. that morning
